Case Study 1

a planning course for the rail industry

The aim of this course was to raise the standard of planning skills to improve safety and efficiency in planning engineering work. Between March 2004 and December 2005 the course was the only planning course recognised by Network Rail leading to a National Competency Control Agency (NCCA) competency.

This course was a significant departure from the traditional 'show and tell' training courses. It was developed within the competency management framework and in close association with planners, trainers and many other industry representatives. It relies on the very best techniques to promote learning and includes a significant level of skills training in facilitation, mediation, influencing and resource management as well as excellent planning and risk assessment skills.

The course acknowledges the skill and experience of the candidate and then adds skills training to equal or exceed the national baseline. It is a professional course with a strong emphasis on building a professional community of peer to peer support and mentoring by trainers and very experienced planners.

feedback from candidates

“The course taught me to probe a lot more - questioning skills and listening skills. I understand how I can influence better.“

“I didn’t feel ‘talked at’. Everyone had an opportunity to explain their situation and ask "is this right - can we do it better?" without feeling that they were being highlighted as the odd one out! Everyone could voice constructive criticism. You didn't mind being criticised because you knew it was to your benefit and also the benefit of others.“

“There were some strong characters and differences in opinions which were managed really well. ...everybody came away from the course feeling that they had learnt something, understood what they had learnt, and they could go back to work and make a difference.“

"Most courses tend not to have a friendly and open atmosphere. I was encouraged to air opinions whether they be right or wrong. In the process, I found out whether they were right or wrong. On many other courses you leave wishing you had asked things and you never get answers to those questions."

95% of nearly 200 candidates rated the course as 'excellent' and over 30% rated it as 'life changing'.
